If you're like most businesses, you may not have considered the impact menopause could have on your workforce. It's time you did. Research by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development found that 67% of working women between the ages of 40 and 60 with experience of menopausal symptoms reported a mostly negative impact on their work. The negative effects reported by these women included reduced concentration (79%), increased stress (68%), less patience with clients and colleagues (49%), and feeling less physically able to complete work tasks (46%). Additionally, over half of the respondents reported being unable to go to work due to their menopause symptoms. Further findings by the Fawcett Society revealed that one in ten women surveyed, who were employed during the menopause, opted to leave their job due to menopausal symptoms.
Supporting menopause in the workplace is not just a matter of empathy; it is crucial for ensuring a fair and inclusive work environment.
Under the Equality Act 2010, workers are safeguarded against discrimination, harassment, and victimisation based on protected characteristics such as disability, age, and sex. Should menopausal symptoms have a significant and long-lasting impact on a woman's ability to perform everyday tasks, these symptoms could potentially be viewed as a disability.
Failing to provide the necessary support can lead to legal repercussions for organisations. It is now more important than ever for employers to recognise menopause as a legitimate workplace issue and take proactive steps to address it. By supporting menopause in the workplace, employers can create a positive and inclusive environment where women feel valued and supported, enabling them to continue contributing to their fullest potential. Moreover, such efforts can lead to improved job satisfaction, increased employee retention, and enhanced productivity.
